As I spend so much time in the markets and see the same scenes every day, I do try to pay particular attention to what everyone is selling should I ever be in the market for any of it. This includes the fishmongers. I expect it is by design that they occupy a specific section of the market- probably to keep the stink away from the veggie vendors would be my guess. No matter where you are, though you can hear them yelling. Part gimmick, part business plan, these guys yelp like something’s on fire to get their message to the people walking through the market. (In Italian of course, but we get the gist) “GET YOUR FRESH FISH HEEEEERE! FRESH SHRIMP! FRESH SQUID! FRESH SWORDFISH. COME GET TODAY’S CATCH RIGHT HEEEEERE! Ironically, Bari being a port city with a large fishing industry, I have not had the best experiences with seafood since I have been here, so there is not much chance I will be buying any of it and although these guys sell, what does appear to be the freshest fish and sea products they know I am not on the market for any of it. But I certainly like looking at the presentations on the ice tables to see what other people are buying.
