It is hard to believe, but it's been more than two years since Margie passed away. Not only did the pandemic cause additional heartache for the family at the end of her life, but also prevented us from properly saying goodbye to a beloved member of the community.
Some do not know this was an actual sequence of events:
Margie had always been open with the family regarding her end of life and beyond. Never shying away from making her wishes known, down to the last detail. We all knew she was going to be cremated and she had decided, years ago, that she wanted the family to stand on the corner of Eighth St. and toss her cremains into the County Waste truck, the din of the hydraulic hopper the soundtrack to the last we would see of her. And for years, that was the plan. Then Bill got involved.
When it came time to decide his final disposition, he thought a burial of his cremains at Saratoga National Cemetery would be fitting for a man of his military record. Phone calls were made, and letters of acceptance issued. This was the family's directive, though he would go on to add that Marge should reconsider "the whole garbage truck thing" and hereby agree to be interred alongside him at Saratoga National Cemetery.
As you can imagine, getting this staunch pacifist to spend eternity anywhere near a military cemetery was inconceivable, resulting in some colorful language. However, compromises were on the horizon.
She was still going to be cremated and if he would abandon his want to reside in a military cemetery, she too would reconsider her initial wishes to become part of the landfill.
And so, it was with her passing that we were able to secure a glass-front, companion niche in the mausoleum at Albany Rural Cemetery.
Sunday July 10
8am to noon
Mausoleum at Albany Rural Cemetery
3 Cemetery Ave, Albany, NY 12204
Members of the Morrell family will be on hand to greet any friends of Margie (and Bill, of course) who wish to visit them in their forever home.
To be clear, there will be NO officiant and NO ceremony. This will be an "open house" to see where Marge and Bill moved to after leaving Round Lake for the last time.
"It ain't Round Lake. It ain't New Orleans. It's Albany Rural...and it's pretty good"
The width of our parents' circle of friends stretched well beyond Round Lake and also included people near and far who are not on social media. PLEASE pass this information on to anyone who might be interested. Thank you.
