Sunday Afternoon At The Movies

Several months ago, for some reason, a flatscreen television was installed at the sauna. I say "for some reason" because up until then, I thought of sauna as more a social thing for the participants and that watching TV would have taken soomething away from that experience. It has a sizable screen and a new enough model that it has a USB port in the back. Even though they have the TV, doesn't mean they have the satellite dish to get anything decent on it! To that end, the guys started bringing flash drives with movies to watch during sauna. It started out the first few times with old Russian movies. Old war movies that weren't particularly interesting to me who couldn't understand most of the dialogue. Although with multiple viewings, I started getting the story at least. Then, one guy decided to start bringing American movies that had been dubbed into Russian. This is where I start to feel like such a girl. I have said after watching the film Dark Knight, that I have to be the only guy on the planet that said in his review "it was good, but there were just too many explosions!" Too many explosions? Most men wouldn't see that as a negative in a movie. Nonetheless, in most cases, I would prefer a chick flick to a shoot-em-up/blow-em-up movie any day. While watching such fillms as The Expendibles and a Jason Statham movie with Jet Li that I think is called Deathrace, I wondered if these guys were receptive to movies that were violent in other ways than cars blowing up etc. They were, and so I went to the list of AFI's top films of all time. I looked some of the top films up in Wikipedia and converted to Russian language for the translation (as they are usually not literal). Then I asked someone here to download them for me. I showed up to sauna with my own flash drive. Luckily, one guy there seems to be pretty well versed in American cinema and gives many of my choices approval before we watch them. To date we have only watched Shawshank Redemption, Goodfellas, and Resevoir Dogs with The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly on deck. (I know the last is not American, but they may not have seen it). So far my picks are going over well and I hope to introduce them to some films that they may never have run across if it wasn't for me. They all know Forrest Gump and Silence of the Lambs. None have ever herd of Seven though and that doesn't have any explosions, you know?
