On our first field trip we went to a city council meeting and introduced ourselves as a group to the community. At the end of the meeting one of the council members approached our group and asked if we would be interested in a guided tour of the city of Chernigov. We accepted, and today was our day for the excursion. We asked for a 2 hour overview tour of the city. We were picked up in the city center by a private bus and the councilman met us there along with a helper who specialized in historical facts (rather than the current statistics of the city). So, between the two of these guys through our interpreter we got an almost 3 hour tour which included an underground monastery which was pretty cool. This town seems to have an incredibly rich history, and so far my biggest disappointment with it is the lack of tourism information available (at least in English). We are told that we will be taking a guided walking tour in the coming weeks which should give us some more details on some of the churches and monasteries in the area. I look forward to learning more about the town and we will be doing some exploring on our own tomorrow, if the weather holds out.

This is a vault of bones in the underground monastery. Curiously, there were no skulls. When I asked why, I was accused of being morbid! WTF? We are all standing around a pile of bones taking pictures, and I am the morbid one?
This is Sara taking a drink from Saint Anthony's well, for whom the monastery was named for.We all took a sip, but I didn't care enough to get my picture taken doing it.
We are planning to walk around town today, so maybe I'll be able to get a few good pics of some of the sights for my next post.
