Day #19/31: Funny

DAY #19: FUNNY

I am often asked what kind of music I like, and I will admit, I like asking the question of others much more than answering it for myself. As someone who music has played such a large role in my life, I am proud to say that I cannot compact the answer to “what do you listen to?” in a nutshell. I like so many different styles, performers, and genres. I am happy that I have artists such as Harry Chapin or The Bangles resting side by side with their polar opposites, Slayer and Venom, on my iPod. I can appreciate many different kinds of music at almost any time. I don’t need to be in a mood to enjoy certain bands. Sometimes I choose to listen to a short list of my favorite songs, but I do not actively say, “I’m depressed, therefore it is time to put on The Doors”. For the past 25 years or so I have been very interested in what is out there musically, even if all of it does not interest me aurally.
When I was first discovering music, I guess I was mostly interested in rock and roll as opposed to country & western, jazz, or classical music. Eventually, I started to drift in the direction of harder rock and then heavy metal piqued my interest most of all. By the time I was in high school I was discovering the subgenres of thrash and black metal as well as hardcore and punk. Today, however, things are a little more complicated. There are so many different sub genres, sub sub genres, and sub sub sub genres that I have long since stopped keeping score- because at this point, if I like it I don’t care what it’s called and if I don’t like it, I wouldn’t need to know what it’s called.
While walking the streets of Kiev, I found this flyer hanging to advertise an upcoming live show in town. As I read the descriptions, I realized just how far out of touch I was by what people are calling themselves these days. I literally laughed out loud to myself as I was grabbing my camera to document this gem. Call me old-fashioned, but I always figured “melodic” and “death metal” were as opposite as Harry Chapin and Slayer. In which case, I just might need to check them out.

  1. I just read in the Times-Picayune this morning that KISS is giving a free concent in the French Quarter the day before we leave. I just might need to check them out. Love, MOM
